Even if Bertram was a pretty clear winner, as long as the price is not taken into account, the next cables featured on “the best” list are Transparent Ultra, Kimber and Jorma. Jorma costs more than Bertram, so we can leave that one out. Kimber is close, priced at a fraction compared to the other two and only lacking some punch in the sub-bass.
Even tough Transparent costs twice as much as Kimber, we still appraise Transparent Ultra for having that extra bit of magic that moves it past the simple parameters. One of us even claimed that Transparent is best regardless of the price, the rest ranked it second. We all agreed that this is an outstanding cable that without doubts will upgrade many top stereos, making them even better. It is your choice to make, whether you for that price would rather get a better CD player (or record player) or an even better amplifier that also would do your sound a world of good.

The Wilsons played big and loud, and the XS sub provided the tightest, deepest home-theater bass I had ever heard. Definitely worth the price of admission.

I couldn't really decide which I liked better, proving yet again that audio is often about trade-offs.

My “Most Wanted Component” for 2011 is an easy one. When I put pairs of A and B SteinMusic Harmonizers and Magic Stones in my listening room, I had an aural epiphany. An enormous increase in the size and layering of the sound coming from around my speakers was immediately apparent. The boxes created a huge, holographic effect on the soundstage. There was a much more continuous wall of sound sensation and the speakers did more of a disappearing act. Music sounded very natural and authentic. No undesirable artifacts were introduced. My room was transformed into something completely different and on a much higher plane of reality. The new and improved experience was as if the walls moved back and the room became larger. I heard musical spatial cues and micro dynamics that placed me much closer in the recording’s venue. The better the recording the more pronounced the layering and depth. This was far better and more enjoyable than I had had or expected. Although an expensive tweak one can get fine results with just a pair (A and B), especially in smaller rooms. Highly recommended. Magicolink, Spectrallink, and MITlink put on a very nice display at the show. The Magico Q1 powered by Spectral DMA360 power amps produced a larger than life sound. The Magico Q1 loudspeaker is my overachiever of the show. This speaker must be heard to be believed. I've yet to hear a speaker this small put out such powerful and delicate sound, especially at an audio show

The diminutive Magico Q1's were playing in this room. The $27K Q1's are the replacement for the Magico Mini's that more or less swept the audio world by storm a few years ago. It's the first time I haven't had to fight a huge crowd to listen to a set of Magico's. I'm surprised the room wasn't packed because I was actually very impressed with what I heard. All over the show people were comparing their sound to Magico, but there is something a bit more pure and real to the sound here than there was in many of the rooms where these comparisons were being thrown about. Was it the horrendously expensive BA Labo electronics? The Nagra T RTR? The Clearaudio table? I don't know, I only know I just wanted to sit and listen to this system for a long time. If these are the successors to the Magico Mini's I now understand what all the fuss was about. I thought they were sublime - too bad I never be able to afford them. But hey, if you CAN at least the $25K price includes the stands.

Having lived for a month with the stand-mounted, two-way Q1 ($24,950/pair) in my smaller system (review in process), I now fully understand what the Magico buzz is all about. Almost daily, the Q1 has left me shaking my head, and my colleagues with their mouths agape: It’s very nearly a full-range speaker crammed into a package measuring only 14”H x 8”W x 14”D. But while the Q3 and Q1 are certainly easier to integrate into a room and drive, no one would ever claim that the Qs are models of super high efficiency

I was wondering why someone was clapping so loudly after the jazz demo finished. And why were they so close to my ear. I’ve never head anyone clap after a demo at an audio show. I opened my eyes and realized that no one in the room was clapping. It was the audience from the record. I was dumbfounded. The new Magnepan 3.7 for $5,495 are stunning. I heard $70,000 speakers that weren’t as detailed, realistic and believable. Yes, they do retail that planar sound. A lot of air and space around the sounds. Normally I don’t like that. And granted I only heard a jazz and classical demo. Maybe with some Slayer I’d have the same reaction. I know one thing for sure. When wifie and I have to look for a new place, it will have a room large enough to put these in. Mid range and upper end was crystal clear. The beat of toms and kettle drums was punchy and deep, but I don’t know how they would hold to an 808 kick. I don’t know what more to say than these are probably the best I heard at T.H.E. Show.

The one and only Magneplanar 3.7w

First, and I might as well get this out of the way, the "best" speaker I heard was the $5500 Magneplanar 3.7s. They were simply stunning. Now, Wendell Diller pulled a few tricks out of his hat in choosing to demo them using Maggie 1.7s as rear channels as well as a Maggie Center channel on his multichannel source material, but that did not detract from what were all heard on the 3.7s. In fact, Wendell specifically played 2-channel material using only on the 3.7s for completeness sake. The sound was just superb. The usual accolades are appropriate; detailed, great imaging, excellent frequency response, low distortion etc. But for me, it was something that is often not mentioned, and that is their vibrancy. They had life. And that was very much the opposite of what is described below for the Lamm-Wilson room. Wendell played that old warhorse, 1812 overture and I nearly stained the seat looking for a subwoofer that wasn't there when those cannon shots were launched. Emotionally involving on every level. And, get this, although he was using Bryston 28s to drive the planars, he was using (I think) some ordinary Lexicon preamp and an inexpensive CD player for the front end, thus making me wonder why we have all been so successfully brain-washed to believe that it takes mega-expensive front ends to have a good sounding system. "Best" is of course a relative term. But if we include both performance and value, ascribing this word to the 3.7s is not difficult at all. A landmark loudspeaker for (almost) everyman indeed!

Though they’re not in my bailiwick, I need to say a few words about Magnepan’s much-anticipated debut of its replacements for the venerable 3.6s, the 3.7 true-ribbon/quasi-ribbon/planar-magnet dipoles. At least on a first listen (with Audio Research electronics, including the DS450 Class D transistor amp), I think that Maggie may have finally succeeded in ameliorating my one and only complaint about its “true ribbon” speakers—to wit, that those true ribbon sticks out like true sore thumbs. On cuts like the busy, exciting, opening theme from Pirates of the Caribbean, the 3.7s hung together astonishingly well, with none of the excess brightness and treble-range prominence I’m used to from true-ribbon Maggies. They were also exceptionally good at resolving low-level detail (and this is a cut with lots of detail). On the other hand, at least in the ARC room, the 3.7s, though quite respectable, were not as full or as thrillingly dynamic in the bass on Pirates as I’ve heard this music sound. The International also lacked for low-end dynamics via the ARC amp, which, unlike most Class D amps, did not seem to have a killer bottom octave, either here or when I heard it in the sonus faber suite. This said, on a cut without deep bass dynamics, like Julie London singing “Cry Me A River,” the 3.7s were as realistic as almost anything I heard at the show (including some very pricey numbers)—so open, so neutral, so natural, so freed-up from enclosure grain and coloration, with marvelous resolution of microdynamics (such as the pianists’ touch on the Satie or Heifetz’s bowing on the Prokofiev). As noted, my only reservation was its handling of large-scale dynamics in the bass. I hope to acquire a pair of these speakers soon to find out whether, as I suspect, it was the amp or the room or both that were robbing the 3.7s of power.

Magico Steals the Show (So Far)

The sound was so full, so all encompassing, and so natural in the small Magico room (Tower 9022) that I doubt I'll encounter another display at RMAF that will top it. Certainly on the first day of the show, the sound achieved by (pictured, left to right) Tim Marutani of Marutani Consulting (Emeryville, CA), Alon Wolf of Magico, and Maier Shadi of The Audio Salon (Los Angeles) was so satisfying that it topped anything else I heard on Day One by a long shot. A very long shot.

As eager as I was to attend the seminars presented in the room by the likes of Prof. Keith O. Johnson of Reference Recordings, the folks of Meridian/Sooloos, and award winning mastering engineers, I was happy to enter when Wolf was playing a full range classical orchestral showpiece. The bass on the Magico Q5 ($59,950/pair, reviewed by Michael Fremer in the November issue of Stereophile) was fantastic: solid, deep, and full. The midrange was ideal, the top true. There was nothing glitzy, overly jazzed up, or illuminated in neon. Every instrument sounded as close to the real thing as I have ever heard from a high-performance system.

The difference between the sound of the prototype Q5 displayed at CES 2010 and that of the final product now being shipped is immense. What these boys have achieved in such a small room was nothing short of tremendous. I guarantee, if I can cover all the rooms on my list by the end of Saturday, I'll be back listening on Sunday afternoon.

The Magicos scored equally well on hi-rez computer files and open-reel tape from the Tape Project. I can't pretend that I'm totally enamored by the sound of the piano on Nojima Plays Liszt, but I can't blame the system for that.

As a replacement to the popular Mini, the new sealed-box two-way speaker is smaller, cheaper (that’s a relative term, it’s still 28,000€ per pair) and sounds like the biggest small speaker you’ve ever heard. This is the Manhattan Apartment loudspeaker par excellence. Yes, it needs a great set of electronics in front of it (it was powered, as is often the case at these events, by Soulution, which had its new 540 Media Player and matching - if huge - 530 integrated amplifier, the first from the brand). But also, yes, it lives up to the reputation Magico has created for itself in so short a time. It sounds like a grand audio cliché, but everyone sitting listening to these small speakers assumed they were the Q3, even when playing deep bass notes. Then they saw the speaker cables led to the Q1, and did a perfect double take at least twice. I stood outside the room to speak to one of the team, and learned how to swear in about 14 languages as other people walked out of the room, heads shaking in disbelief at how Magico gets that much sound out of that little speaker without fracturing the laws of physics.

Magico's Q3 ($34,000 per pair) sounded extraordinary. It sounded dimensional, full, and with heaping amounts of natural detail that gave me a breathtaking view into the recording. Perhaps most amazing was the bass response. It was deep and linear, tight and articulate -- and ultimately, utterly standard setting. The Q3 does something else that might be more important, though, and I'm hopeful this will make next year's CES even better: It made reference-grade sound at a price point much lower than expected. Many would have you believe you need to spend six figures for super-speaker sound. But that's just not true. Sometimes six figures won't even buy you good sound.

On the Lobby level, Emeryville-based retailer Audio Image was showing off the Magico Q-3 ($34,000) speakers with Audio Research Ref 250 mono blocks ($25,590), which was a U.S. premiere for the power amplifiers. The rest of the system included the Audio Research Ref Anniversary Line stage pre-amp ($25,000) with MIT Oracle MA Speaker Interfaces ($27,000), MIT Oracle MA-X balanced interconnects ($8,849) and MIT Oracle Z-III power cables ($1,199). When I first walked in we were presented with a demonstration from the Berkeley Audio Alpha DAC ($5,000) and the Auraliti L-1000 file server ($3,500). I heard blue grass, folk, some pop rock and an impressive Bach Oregon piece. While the sound seemed technically perfect, it was a bit too emotionally void for me. On my second time into the room on day three of the show I wondered what had changed? The perfection was still there but now there was also emotion and body to the music. It turns out the source had changed to the TransRotor “Orfeo” turntable ($17,000) with a Graham Phantom 9-inch arm ($5,995) and Air Tight PC-1 moving coil cartridge ($6,000). What a difference a source makes. And while the Q-3s in the large room were very good I have to say I was more awe struck with the small, $20,000 Q-1 speakers in a much smaller room. More a room in a home I could afford, which for me means the piece of equipment changes from the ethereal plane of ‘will never own’ to ‘could possibly own’. Those smaller little Q-1 speakers were awesome.

Magicolink, Spectrallink, and MITlink put on a very nice display at the show. The Magico Q1 powered by Spectral DMA360 power amps produced a larger than life sound. The Magico Q1 loudspeaker is my overachiever of the show. This speaker must be heard to be believed. I've yet to hear a speaker this small put out such powerful and delicate sound, especially at an audio show

When it comes to hardware the Magico M5 and V2 speakers pleased almost everyone I know. In fact these speakers not only pleased most people they were the best speakers many people have ever heard. I include myself in that group of people show haven't heard anything better. Ever. In my post from December 9, 2008 I predicted a new pair of Magico speakers would win best of show at CES. The unnamed speakers were the Magico M5s which had yet to be released to the public. I spent quite some time at Magico back in December listening to the M5 speakers and was absolutely stunned by their performance in the Magico listening room. At CES Magico had some difficult room conditions to work with but still managed to pull off an amazing performance with both the V2 and M5 loudspeakers. To be totally honest I think Magico just raised the bar and set a new paradigm in high-end audio loudspeaker design and sound quality.

I spent an hour at the Devialet demo at CES yesterday. Spectacular and a game changer is the best descriptor I can use to characterize my initial impressions. Used on a new 30K set of Focal 3 ways with Crystal speaker cable, the sound was among the best at the show. It is indeed strange, with a Class A driver stage with a Class D output stage. It delivers 240 W/channel and don’t ask me why but it claims "the lowest signal distortion on the market, the lowest output impedance, the best S/N, the lowest intermodulation" and a few other "bests". Built in phone stage, DAC, input selectivity, and future options for DSP speaker or room mods in a gorgeous "audio jewelry" package for 15K left a good impression on all listeners regardless of material. Sadly most people probably didn't get to hear it as it was off-site at the Mirage. I thought it was among the top highlights of the show, but most importantly, because the overwhelming story at this year's show was that affordability is the operative word. The old Hi-end, great music at astronomic costs, is now officially dead. There is so much good music at moderate prices that the paradigm shift is now complete. Can you spell M-A-G-N-E-P-L-A-N-A-R???
I have heard the Devialet on a pair of CLXs and Wilsons sashas. i have heard these speakers in the same room with ARC, CJ, Krell, Pathos, MBL, and a number of other sets of electronics over the years. In a word, the Devialet is excellent. more specifically, i find the tonality to be suprisingly warm while providing ample power at moderate levels to control the bass. very pure sound (whatever that means!)

We have had the Devialet for about 10 days now and it is unanimous , a true winner. This type of leap forward in absolute performance coupled with utility has not existed prior to Devialet. We have run it of challenging speakers such as CLX's, a show-stopper, Focal Stella Utopia EM's, and even Burmester B30's/B100's. We fed it HRx files directly from the PS Audio transport and it handled it beautifully. Dynamics, speed, presence, and spatial correctness were are top notch. I can tell you that all of us at Digital Ear are in love with the Devislet D-Premiere. Additionally, we have thrown a bit of testing at it to configure the additional outputs for subs and the result was successful and performance was in line with the rest of the product, absolutely top-tier.

NOTE: The 165 Wrms @ 8 Ohms / 330 Wrms @ 4 Ohms / 660 Wrms @ 2 Ohms figures measured by Paul Miller for his extensive review in HiFi News was performed on a willingly restrained, very early software version running on a prototype. All production units feature the above mentioned specifications.

Still not in the 911 league. But I don't expect it to be. Remember, you're getting a power amp, preamp, DAC, phono stage and streamer for 16k. So the amp is worth about 4500 if you parcel it out.

The 911 mk. 3 is still the world's best amplifier in my book. And that's the only product I've ever said that about. It really has perfect tonality, tons of power (but a pair of them are even better) and an overall sound that never leaves me wanting to deal with vacuum tubes, and that's from a tube lover.

While I've heard a couple of tube amps that might have a few more molecules of magic than the 911, they don't have the overall sound that the 911 possesses. And, considering that I have my system on 10-16 hours a day, tube power amps are impractical for every day use around here, at least as a reference component.

The Devialet is definitely the top of its class. Even if you take the DAC and Phono stage out of the equation, I think you would be hard pressed to find a $16,000 amp and preamp that sound better. Different maybe, and certainly nothing that will fit into your decor like the Devialet does.

It might be the only product out there that is this gorgeous that also has audiophile performance. I certainly haven't seen another component with this performance that is also compact and attractive.

The sound with Focal speakers was clear, balanced, open, and grain-free, with no hint of the hash sometimes associated with class-D amplification. (The eggs at the breakfast were also excellent.)

I just received my 089 yesterday. It is the singular most impressive piece od audio gear I have ever owned. It cost over 3x as much as my old McIntosh MCD500, but is easily 10x better. The soundstage of my Burmester 089 is wide, deep and very 3D like. I see see more into the music and it is very dynamic, yet liquid and very anolog. In fact, when you close your eyes and listen, it sounds like a stat-of-the art turntable. It just does not sound digital in any way.

Best of Show:
The MBL Radialstrahler loudspeakers and front end were literally overpowering. They combine the soundstage sound of planars with powerful bass and, perhaps most amazing, superb imaging. I doubt I've ever heard a better system. But that will come as no surprise to readers of TAS who have followed Jonathan Valin's acute discussions of these sterling loudspeakers. Another Teutonic contender was vying mightily for best of show and gets my vote. That loudspeaker is the $48,000 Acapella Violin, which was powered by Einstein preamplifiers and monoblock amplifiers and fed by a very snazzy looking $4,000 Lector CD player in the Audio Limits room. These speakers don't blow the house down. But they offered such a superb octave-to-octave balance, such refined and extended highs, coupled with more than adequate bass, and, above all, such a timbrally accurate and glorious midrange, that I was enraptured. The natural trumpet of English musician Crispian Steele-Perkins sounded bang-on, as the loudspeakers captured every nuance with amazing accuracy and speed. I only got a taste of these loudspeakers, but that was enough. From the first note, they will rivet you to your seat. Honky horn sound? No way. These things breathe music and make an emotional connection that you will find almost impossible to sever. I, for one, am still lusting after them.

I just received my 089 yesterday. It is the singular most impressive piece od audio gear I have ever owned. It cost over 3x as much as my old McIntosh MCD500, but is easily 10x better. The soundstage of my Burmester 089 is wide, deep and very 3D like. I see see more into the music and it is very dynamic, yet liquid and very anolog. In fact, when you close your eyes and listen, it sounds like a stat-of-the art turntable. It just does not sound digital in any way.

The diminutive Magico Q1's were playing in this room. The $27K Q1's are the replacement for the Magico Mini's that more or less swept the audio world by storm a few years ago. It's the first time I haven't had to fight a huge crowd to listen to a set of Magico's. I'm surprised the room wasn't packed because I was actually very impressed with what I heard. All over the show people were comparing their sound to Magico, but there is something a bit more pure and real to the sound here than there was in many of the rooms where these comparisons were being thrown about. Was it the horrendously expensive BA Labo electronics? The Nagra T RTR? The Clearaudio table? I don't know, I only know I just wanted to sit and listen to this system for a long time. If these are the successors to the Magico Mini's I now understand what all the fuss was about. I thought they were sublime - too bad I never be able to afford them. But hey, if you CAN at least the $27K price includes the stands.
